Competency # 9 Website

http://www.worlib.org/vol17no1/collen_v17n1.shtml
Copyright 2007. Lauren Collen.

This class has introduced a new world of learning information, storage, and retrieval from search engines and the importance of examining information from various databases. In view of my theme, "Storytime For All", this website ties "research" using multimedia format for children's books blending its importance with our class theme. Included in the Reference List is useful supplemental information that supports literacy, storytime, and interactive media. This resource list for those searching this subject will find a sound beginning to "stringing pearls".

Google Search was used with the keywords, "Research Children's Storytime".
The website is World Libraries. The article and research that appears was funded by http://www.icdlbooks.org/ , another website to be recommended for those who may not be able to attend a "live" Storytime. The ICDL offers free digital books to be incorporated in any Storytime hour.

Competency #8 Research Visual

This December, 2005, graph was reported by Community Research Institute Literacy Survey. Copyright 2007. Greater Grand Rapids Reads. Grand Rapids Public Schools reported that 17% of Kindergarten children met literacy benchmarks in all areas. 1) Letter Recognition, 2) Rhyming, 3) Parts of a Book. The chart shows the parent/child frequency of literacy activities in the last month: Sharing books, singing the alphabet, playing rhyming word games and talking about pictures. My rationale for presenting this chart is the importance parental interaction influences on literacy development of a child. Understanding that, I hope parents would become involved in library storytime programs promoting, encouraging, and engaging early literacy learners. This chart can be found at:

Competency #7 Image

For this Image, Google Image Search was used with search term, "Library Storytime". Found there were many images of children in the library as well as a poster, Library Storytime by Maurice Sendak. I selected this image showing children anxiously engaged in Storytime, taken from Tipton Carnegie Public Library, established in 1903. The Tipton Library offers reading programs including Storytime. A highlight, as shown here are writers and authors who read from their own works and answer questions. Copyright 2006. City of Tipton, Iowa. More information and images can be found at:

Competency #6 Searching

Specific Faction First
Topic Search: Does the use of puppets increase literacy among toddlers during library storytime?
Database: First Search World Cat

Using (puppet and literacy and toddler) to create the facet, 1 hit resulted. That was the “net tossed out”. Too few results especially if the only hit generated was not relevant. To broaden this search thus ending the specific faction but wanting more information, I began a new search clicking,“ Related Subjects”. This increased hits to 992, 834 in English. Now the task if we continued this search in this database would be to apply limiters, adjusting our results to net near 30 relevant searchable results. I used this database first because of the specific range list it classifies information of items retrieved (books, computer, visual, sound, serials and articles). These features make me a fan of World Cat. Also, the links above the results,(Related Subjects, Authors, and Limit) are useful when completing a Specific Faction and moving on to broaden or narrow searches taken to Successive Fractions or Pearl Citations.

Building Block
Topic Search: Does the use of puppets increase literacy among toddlers during library storytime?
Database: Academic Search Complete

Concept A (puppet OR marionette OR toy)
Concept B (literacy OR reading OR story)
Concept C (toddler OR child OR preschooler)
S1: puppet or marionette or toy
S2: literacy or reading or story
S3: toddler or child or preschooler
S4: S1 and S2 and S3=results

Using Academic Search Complete, 15 hits were retrieved using this building block. From those, “toys” were more recalled. For precision, my query seeks the use of puppets, however “toys” is likened to puppets and makes an interesting search or beginning subject for a later citation pearl. I chose “Toys That Get Kids Talking” because of the related keyword matches found in Subject Terms and Abstract. This book proved the most relevant. Puppets are toys and the Subject listed “preschool children, hand puppets, reading” which were keywords used in the query. I find it interesting that using the same building block facets deliver differing hits in other databases . For this database the visual links provided such as print, email, download in full text or PDF are helpful.

Successive Fraction
Topic Search:
Does the use of puppets increase literacy among toddlers during library storytime?
Database: Library Literature

Using the facet (puppet or marionette AND literacy or reading AND toddler or preschooler) my first attempt produced 0 results. The second try I adjusted the limiters from Smart Search to Keyword Subject again no results. Using a new facet, I entered (puppet and reading and toddler), again, no result. I went to the Thesaurus and typed in “Puppet”. There 45 records were produced and to the left side, subject listings to modify the search were available. I chose “Storytelling With Puppets”. If I were to continue to narrow or modify this search, I would have chosen a New Search Subject Listing that included themes related to the controlled language of this database: Storytelling, Puppets, and Services to Preschool children. Using the Thesaurus feature found in Library Literature produced searchable records and a beginning access point to which my facets limited zero.

Citation Pearl
Topic Search:
Does the use of puppets increase literacy among toddlers during library storytime?
Database: Books In Print

Taking the title, Storytelling with Puppets by Connie Champlin, published 1989,which was found from Library Lit, I used the Books In Print Quick Search. I was delighted, 4 hits retrieved. I kept three as the fourth was a repeat “on demand”. Beginning my strand using these 3 titles, I clicked on Bowker Subject to add more “Titles” for searching. “Puppet Magic” received 61 results. From those I narrowed my choices to books with an “active” status. The first page of 25 results had listed 14 out of print. Other features I used in created a sting of titles to be used is “Children’s Room” a feature listed below Advanced Search. Here resources are offered promoting browsing and selection of titles helpful in creating a Citation Pearl. “Favorite Series”, “Kid’s Corner” and “A to Zoo”(offers over 2,400 Subject Headings for children’s picture books).

Competency # 4 RSS Feed

I choose to access School Library Journal http://feeds.feedburner.com/SchoolLibraryJournal-EarlyLearningNews. Parents and professionals looking to improve Storytime ideas within a public or school storytime environment will find this publication's news helpful. It provides articles and resources for early childhood literacy. A beneficial source to current storytime trends and other literacy ideas streamed in for all to glean.

Competency# 3 Posting a Podcast

Using Google, I typed in the question, "What is a Podcast?" I was taken to Wikipeadia which led to another link, "Education". Through this "berrypicking" adventure in Google I found a site called EPN-The Education Podcast Network. Here listing 92 sources of children citing poetry, class news reports, and stories written by K-5 grades. Looking for audio and visual stories that could be listened to by younger children at home unable to attend a library for storytime attracted my attention. Furthermore, the stream presented here is about Volcanoes. Children present information, research, tell jokes, share poetry, and thrill listeners with their genuine interaction. A must for those entertaining the theme of volcanoes for library storytime. My rationale to selecting this choice was to introduce this class example to serve as a possible model for parents at home with technology to create a "storytime" broadcast or even the school library to podcast their daily books on air.
